Liberal scored two goals in the first half in Goddard Monday, and the defense took over from there, shutting out the Lady Lions to advance in the Class 5A playoffs with a 2-0 win, the first post-season victory in the history of girls soccer at Liberal High School.

The Lady Redskins scored both goals against the wind.

Sophomore Kim Alarcon scored the first goal with 26 minutes to play in the first half off an assist by Kayla Gokey. The pass set up Alarcon in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Alarcon drove the ball to the net for the 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, the two traded spots, and it was Alarcon providing a pass to Gokey, and a risky move by the Goddard goalie to try to challenge Gokey away form the box allowed Gokey to sidestep the goalie and score on an open net for a 2-0 lead.

Form then on, the Lady Redskins had to try to defend the lead.

“We controlled most of the game and had the more clear opportunities,” Liberal coach Carlos Ruiz said. “Goddard’s shots were from far range giving Reyna Gonzalez little trouble making catching saves.”

At one point, Liberal appeared to have extended the lead to 3-0, but the goal was waved off because of an offsides call.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Liberal was able to cruise to the 2-0 win.

“Our girls played well, but most importantly competed hard for 80 minutes,” Ruiz said. “We out hustled our opponent, imposed our will and athleticism. This group was determined tonight, determined to reach something no other team before them had done before. We have now reached eight wins and won a playoff game for the first time in program history.”

Liberal will now face the top-seeded Bishop Carroll Lady Golden Eagles in the Sweet 16 for a regional title.
