This Mother’s Day was a busy one for Seward County firefighters.

County fire chief Andrew Barkley said in a press release, Sunday brought two grass fires, which he said were caused by lightning strikes from thunderstorms traveling through the area.

“The first fire was dispatched at 7:21 p.m. in the 4000 block of Road F,” he said. “Units arrived on scene to find approximately one acre of light grass with a slow rate of spread.”

Barkley said the fire was contained in 20 minutes, using two engines, one squad and seven personnel at the scene.

“Firefighters were assisted by a local resident with a tractor and disc, placing the disc line around the fire to assist with containment,” he said. “Units cleared the scene at 8:29 p.m.”

The second fire, Barkley said, was dispatched at 9:07 p.m. south of Kismet.

“Units en route could see the fire and had to locate it and give better directions to responding units for across,” he said. “Units arrived on scene to find three acres light fuels with a slow rate of spread.”

Barkley said the fire was contained in one hour, using four engines, one squad and 10 firefighters. He added mutual aid was received from the Plains Fire Department, which assisted with one engine, one water tender and the fire chief.

“Firefighters were again assisted with a grader by a local resident due to terrain in the area,” he said.
