Liberal knew that Maize was going to be a tough opponent to face for a trip to the state tournament in the Class 5A regional Wednesday, but they never got the chance to find out, falling in the opening round to Eisenhower, 9-1 to end the season.

Liberal might have been playing with a two-game strategy for the day, saving ace Cole Evans for Game 2 and trying to utilize the rest of the staff against Eisenhower.

Kaiden Bigham got the start for the Redskins against the Tigers, and two singles and a triple in the first inning allowed Eisenhower tot ake an early 2-0 lead.

Liberal scored in the third on a two-out RBI single by Evans that scored Elijah McCarter, and the lead was cut  to 2-1.

A walk in the fourth came back to haunt Bigham when the runner later scored to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead, and Bigham was relieved after the inning by Braxton Hyde.

After a scoreless fifth, Hyde ran into trouble in the sixth. A leadoff triple followed by an RBI single gave Eisenhower a 4-1 lead, and after Hyde recorded back-to-back outs, a walk, a triple and back-to-back errors allowed Eisenhower to score four more runs tot ake a 4-1 lead.

Eisenhower added another run in the seventh, but the Redskins went down in order to end their season with a 9-1 loss.

Evans had Liberal’s lone RBI with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate, and Cesar Burciaga, Alex Carrillo, Elijah McCarter and Cade Hinkle also had one-hit games, all singles.

Bigham took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Hyde allowed five runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one. Only three runs were earned.

Liberal ended the season with a 13-6 record.
