Jim Barnett earned the Republican nomination for Kansas Governor in 2006, and 12 years later, he will try to do it again.

Barnett’s exploratory committee has issued a release that he will announce his intentions to run for governor Tuesday morning and begin a statewide kick-off announcement tour.

Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., Barnett will be in Liberal at the Rock Island Depot to speak to locals about his candidacy for governor.

Barnett is the third Republican to enter the race along with two Democrats who have also made their announcements.

Barnett will join Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Wichita businessman Wink Hartman in the Republican primary while former Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and former Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Josh Svaty have joined the race for the Democratic nomination for governor.

According to the release, Barnett is a practicing physician in Topeka, past president of the Emporia School Board, and former state senator for Emporia and neighboring areas. In 2006, Barnett won a seven-way primary and was the Republican candidate for governor.

Current governor, Sam Brownback, has served two consecutive terms and cannot seek a third.

The election for governor will not take place until Nov. 2018, but these five had opted to enter the race early to begin the efforts of campaigning on a state that contains the third most miles of highway in the nation.

Barnett will hit the ground running, making five campaign stops on the first day of his announcement and four more the day after with an emphasis on Western Kansas.
