Jaron Robinson had three hits Wednesday, and every one of them cleared the outfield fence. Robinson’s three home runs provided the spark, and the Bee Jays erupted for seven home runs in a 20-5 win over the Derby Twins that narrowed the gap at the top of the Jayhawk League standings, keeping Derby within a game of Hays for first place.

Marcus Shoemaker and Garrett Scott both scored on the same Derby error in the first inning, and Trent Maloney added a home run that scored two more, and Liberal had an early 4-0 lead.

Cody Wernli started for the Bee Jays on the mound, and after allowing three hits in the first inning, he limited the scoring to one run.

Liberal added two more runs in the third when Colton Onstott hit a double followed by Robinson’s first home run, and Liberal led 6-1.

Russell Crippen responded for the Twins in the bottom with a solo home run to cut the lead to 6-2.

But Zac Cook led off the fourth with a home run for the Bee Jays, Cale O’Donnell added a two run shot, and Robinson followed with another home run that scored two more, and Liberal had an 11-2 lead.

Cook added another home run in the fifth to go along with an RBI single from O’Donnell, and Liberal pushed the lead to 13-2.

Back-to-back Bee Jay doubles from Maloney and Kyle Schmidt started the sixth inning with another run, and Chad Kennedy added an RBI single to give the Bee Jays a 15-2 lead.

Zach Zeller relieved Wernli to toss a scoreless sixth, and Onstott led off the seventh for the Bee Jays with a double followed by Robinson’s third home run.

Kennedy and Shoemaker each added RBI singles in the inning, and Liberal led 19-2.

Maloney hit an RBI single in the eighth, and Liberal led 20-2.

Liberal manager Daniel Parker protected his bullpen with the large lead by using position players for the final three innings, starting with Gage teer who threw a scoreless seventh before loading the bases in the eighth and walking a run home.

But that was the only Derby run in the inning, and Robinson took the mound in the ninth and struck out two Derby batters before an error allowed Derby’s Tyler MacNamara to reach.

Parker put James Hardeberger on the mound, and after a walk, a double, and error and another walk allowed two runs to score, Hardeberger finally recorded the final out for a 20-5 win.

Liberal will look for the series sweep at 7 p.m. tonight in Derby.
