A chain dragging on the road is what local fire officials are blaming for a fire Thursday evening in Seward County.

Fire chief Andrew Barkley said just before 6:30 Thursday night, Seward County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a grass fire along U.S. Highway 83, north of Road 17.

“Units arrived on scene to find two separate roadside grass fires,” he said in a press release. “Fires were contained to approximately 14 acres.”

Barkley said six fire apparatus and 10 personnel responded to the scene.

“No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened,” he said. “Cause of the fire is roadside start and appears may have started from a chain dragging on the road.”
