Special items will include beef, pork, poultry and goat

• L&T staff report

It is the prime of the garden season, and the Liberal Farmers Market is in full swing, and lots of vine ripened, locally grown, fresh produce is coming in.

“We have lots of specialty crop varieties not available in grocery stores,” market manager Donna Thorp said. “We are open every Saturday 8 to noon in the Village Plaza parking lot through September.”

Part of this weekend’s Farmers Market will be Dale Family Farms from Protection with beef, pork, poultry and goat meat.

“So whether you are shopping for grass finished meat, the perfect tomato, the sweetest melon, delicious baked goods or unique garden art, the Farmers Market is the place for you,” Thorp said. “We have a very diverse range of vendors every week with everything from salsa, modern art to fine craftsman man red cedar furniture.”

Thorp said new vendors are welcome, and the Farmers Market is a great place to have a church, club or group fundraiser.

“Like our Facebook page, ‘Farmers Market in Liberal’s for new promotions and updates,” she said.

The Farmers Market will also be hosting a tomato contest this weekend. Categories include the biggest tomato by weight and ugliest tomato by deformity (no spoiled tomatoes).

The cost to enter the contest is $1, and this allows participants to enter as many tomatoes as they wish. The tomatoes have to be registered by 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and they will be judged at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The winner in each category will take home $20 in Farmers Market bucks to be spent at any of the Farmers Market vendors through Sept. 30.
