Daily Leader staff report
The Liberal and Southwestern Heights volleyball seasons came to an end Saturday evening with losses in the Sub-state round of the Kansas state playoffs.
For the Lady Mustangs, Saturday’s results were especially disappointing.
Southwestern Heights opened the tournament with a solid showing in a 25-18, 25-6 win over Tomas More Prep.
The Lady Mustangs dropped the first set of the second round against Scott City, but rallied for a 23-25, 25-16, 25-14 victory to set up the championship match against Goodland.
Goodland advanced to the finals with wins over Lakin (25-12, 25-20) and Hoisington (26-24, 18-25, 25-21).
In the finals, Heights took the first set, 25-21, but it would be Goodland who would advance to the state tournament, winning the final two sets, 25-19, 25-22.
With the loss, Southwestern Heights ends an otherwise dominating season on a disappointing note with a 38-3 overall record.
In the Class 5A Sub-state tournament in Great Bend, the No. 3 seeded Lady Redskins, as expected, opened with a 25-22, 25-21 win over Hays, but ran into a tough No. 7 Newton squad in the finals, falling 25-15, 25-11.
Liberal finishes the season with a 26-13 overall record.
