Struggling to score goals all season, the Liberal Redskins were able to find the back of the goal against Hays Thursday, and despite allowing the Indians to have a strong scoring night as well, Liberal was able to strike the final blow in a 6-5 win.

The Redskins had the wind at their backs in the first half, and Liberal kept the ball deep in Hays territory in the first 20 minutes, but they couldn’t get a clean shot, and the two teams were tied 0-0 midway through the first half.

But the Redskins were able to break through with 14:29 remaining in the first half when Hays was called for a handball in the box, and Mike Fronseca connected on a penalty kick to give the Redskins a 1-0 lead.

With 10:30 to play in the first half, Hays committed another foul in the box, and Fronseca hit his second penalty kick to give the Redskins a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Estevan Dominguez sent a corner kick in front of the goal, and Fronseca connected to give the Redskins a 3-0 lead at half.

Christina Sobalvarro fought the wind early in the second half after receiveing a pass from Robert Campos to give the Redskins a 4-0 lead.

But Hays battled back and scored three goals in four minutes to cut Liberal’s lead to 4-3.

Alfredo Moncayo extended the lead to 5-3 for the Redskins.

But Hays took advantage of a hand ball agains the Redskins in th box and added a penalty kick goal, and then they tied the game 5-5 with their second straight goal.

It appeared the game might head to overtime, but Dominguez got free in front of the Hays goal and connected on a score with 1:28 to play to give the Redskins a 6-5 lead.

Hays couldn’t respond, and the Redskins were able to hold on for the win.

The Redskins will travel to Wichita Monday to participate in the North Cup tournament.
