From a punt blown backward to a kick-off that ended in a turnover to a pass into the wind for a game-winning touchdown, there are some things you simply have to see for yourself to truly appreciate, and there were plenty of plays in an old-fashioned shootout in Dodge City Friday night that made it a second-straight game of Redskin magic.

First, there was a controversial play of a Dodge City punt that ended up being a huge gain for the Red Demons.

Dodge City punted into the wind, and the ball went high into the air before the wind blew it backward and along the sideline in the Red Demon backfield.

Dodge City picked it up and ran down the sideline for 50 yards to the Liberal 15 yard line.

Turns out, the officials were right. Even though the kick crossed the line of scrimmage in the air and bounced backward, by rule, the only thing that matters is where it is touched, and it was touched behind the original line of scrimmage, allowing Dodge City to advance the ball for a first down and more.

You had to see it.

Forget the punt, the big plays came next. With less than two minutes to half and Dodge City having a first down deep in Redskin territory, the defense dropped Dawson Williams for a two-yard loss followed by converging on Jaiel Johnson for a three-yard loss.

Even after the Redskins were offsides and gave five yards back, Dodge City completed a pass for no gain, and that forced the Red Demons to set up for  a short field goal try.

But they attempted a fake, and the Redskins dropped Williams for a five-yard loss to kill the scoring threat.

It was a beautiful response after a fluke play.

You had to see it.

Liberal started the second half with another big play when Dodge City tried to throw a screen pass like they did with success in the first half, but the Redskins read the play, and Cesar Burciaga intercepted the pass in a crowd of Red Demons and returned it to the 1 yard line.

You had to see it.

Burciaga scored two plays later to give the Redskins a 21-17 lead, and on the next drive he scored on a 16-yard after breaking tackles at the line and down the sideline.

You had to see it.

Despite the great comeback, Dodge City had a rally of its own, and when they took a lead late in the fourth quarter, it seemed like it would take a miracle for the Redskins to move the ball 80 yards with straight line winds blowing in their face.

With a little more than two minutes, the Redskins simply weren’t getting enough yards per play as the time was trickling away.

Liberal pulled off one fourth-down conversion and was facing another when Dunlap, who would usually keep the ball in his hands when the game was on the line, lofted a pass to Tyrique Chandler who made the catch over the outstretched arms of a Dodge City defender, and then after two more defenders ran into each other, Chandler only had one more defender to beat, and he outran him to the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

You had to see it.

This Friday Liberal hosts a playoff game, and you’ll want to see it.
