
ULYSSES – Leon Shapland, 94, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. He was born May 19, 1923 to Oswald Ernest and Mary Elizabeth (Miller) Shapland on the family farm in Lane County. He married Peggy Alene Yohn Dec. 22, 1948 in Ulysses. She preceded him in death. He graduated from Dighton High School in 1942. While in high school, he played basketball. After he finished school, he moved to Grant County to farm. Later, he moved to Kearny County, where he lived and farmed for 70 years. He enjoyed farming and running cattle, and listening to country and western music. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include children: Connie Dawson, Greensburg, Leland Shapland and wife, Linda, Garden City, Debra Crall and husband, Edward, Thomas, Okla., and Kevin Shapland and companion, Katie Metcalf, Ulysses; sister, Helen Jewett, Overland Park; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Elmer, Claud, Melvin and William Shapland; and sisters, Carrie Honeyman and Lucy Reed. • Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Reverend Todd Guinn presiding. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
