Jason Sautter made his debut as coach of the Seward County Saints Wednesday, and he earned his first win with a come-from-behind 97-80 win over Clarendon in the Greenhouse.

While Sautter wanted his team to be focused on defense, Seward had trouble shutting down the perimeter game of Clarendon, and the Saints could never build a decent lead without a long-range shot pulling Clarendon close.

Seward committed several charging fouls late in the first half, and turnovers also started to add up, allowing Clarendon to take a 45-41 halftime lead.

Not only did Seward end the first half on a slump, but they were slow to start the second half, and Clarendon took advantage, jumping out to an 11-point lead.

But the Saints increased the defensive pressure with a zone press, and Clarendon struggled to find the open looks they enjoyed earlier.

The Saints rallied back with hot shooting, and midway through the second half, they had erased Clarendon’s double digit lead.

Seward also turned the tables from outside, draining threes to take a lead, and Clarendon went cold.

Seward’s energy picked up throughout the final 10 minutes and they built as much as an 18-point lead before coasting to the 97-80 win.

Seward shot a blistering 57 percent including 61 percent from three-point range.

Ke’Sean Davis led the Saints with 18 points. Devin Bethely scored 15, Isiah Small had 14, Terrell Alfred had 13, and Mohamad Selmi scored 12.

Seward hosts Northeast Oklahoma at 4 p.m. Saturday.
