The odds were against the Seward County Lady Saints on Tuesday night. Having defeated the Hutchinson Lady Blue Dragons in their three previous meetings this season, the law of averages dictated this could be Hutch’s night to shine.
But the Lady Saints don’t believe in odds or laws of averages, and downed the Lady Blue Dragons 3-1 to advance to this weekend’s KJCCC Region VI tournament in Wichita. Seward will face Dodge City Friday at 6 p.m. at Newman University.
Hutchinson came to Liberal for the second time in less than a week ready to play, winning the first set 25-20 before Seward won the next three 25-22, 25-21, 26-24. The Lady Saints trailed most of the fourth set before rallying to win.
“We were down most of the match, when you get right down to it,” said Seward head coach Bert Luallen. “Hutch came in here with a real good game plan.”
The Lady Blue Dragons had nothing to lose.
“Teams like that are scary,” Luallen said. “It would have possibly made up for some of the problems they’ve had this year and the disappointments that they’ve had by knocking us off and going to the tournament.”
With Hutchinson’s Jordan Rehm having the game of her life, the Lady Saints adjusted their scheme a little bit as once again, Hutch was keying on Sheina Fernandes. That opened up Isabela Silva and Daiane Souza on the outside, while Jade Greene and Stacie Carver were effective on the net, as well.
That’s not to say Fernandes was quiet. The sophomore had several key kills on the night.
Hutch led as much as 18-12 in the fourth set before Seward inched back in a set that saw 16 ties and lead changes. Down 23-20, Fernandes killed it to cut it to 23-21, and with Souza at the serve, Seward took a 24-23 lead and went on to win 26-24.
“I think it does speak a little bit to the heart of the team about their desire and what they wanted,” Luallen said. “I give (Hutch) credit. They worked very hard and made it very tough. But our kids persevered and were able to pull it out.”
