HUGOTON – Brenda Joyce (Simpson) Eckert, 69, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital of St. Joseph in Wichita.

She was born May 7, 1948 to Melvin Leroy and Dorothy Marie (Moody) Simpson in Garden City.  

She was a graduate of Satanta High School and attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University at Alva, Okla.

She married David Carl Eckert Aug. 31, 1968 at United Methodist Church in Satanta. He survives.  

She was a member of United Methodist Church of Hugoton and she taught Sunday school.  

She was member of the Eastern Star Chapter 471 of Ulysses and served on the Board of Directors of Project Hope in Hugoton, and was a past president of Beta Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma of Hugoton, Moscow, Rolla and Elkhart. She was also a member of the  Hugoton American Legion Auxiliary, the Stevens County Hospital Auxiliary and she was a past charter vice president of the Kansas Foster Parents Association.

She taught more than 40 years of elementary school and junior high math classes.  She taught in Alva, Okla., Garden City, Albert, Valley Center, Maize, Sedgwick, Hugoton and Liberal. 

Survivors also include son, Marcus Carl Eckert and wife, Tammi, Hugoton.; daughter, Angela Kaye Staten, Liberal.; brothers, Dr. Larry Simpson and wife, Sara, Landenberg, Penn., and Dr. Dennis Simpson and wife, Julie, Pullman, Wash.; six grandchildren: Takoda Marcus Eckert, Raven Hope Staten, Rayne Qvena Staten, Rayshawn Queshae Staten, Tala Isabel Eckert, Tukker Mecay Eckert; and other relatives and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Francesca Jean Eckert. 

• Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton with Pastor Becky Davison presiding with O.E.S. rites by Ulysses Chapter #471.

A memorial has been established for Project Hope, Hugoton and Kansas Masonic Foundation. Memorials may be mailed to Paul’s-Robson Funeral Home-PO Box 236-Hugoton, KS 67951.
