Those wanting a bit of time out of the house before preparing that Thanksgiving meal and spending time with relatives will have the chance to do just that Thanksgiving morning.

This year’s Turkey Trot will be Thursday morning  with registration starting at 8:45 and the race beginning at 9:30. All of the money raised this year will again go to the Emily Bremenkamp Memorial Scholarship Fund (last year saw two $500 scholarships given). The event will start at the Recreation Center.

“Supporting families here in the community has been a driving force for us doing this, we have a really supportive community, so knowing we have a family who needs support has been a continuing factor in why people continue to come and support the event,” Coordinator Amanda Collins said. “It’s great to know that if something happens to a family here in town, they’ll be supported no matter what. I would just encourage people to continue supporting the Bremenkamp family. I hope people come out and support the cause, that would be my hope and expectation for this year.”

For those who will be unable to make it to the Turkey Trot but still wish to make a contribution to the cause, Collins said they can send a check or donation to the KSCB radio station at 1410 N. Western Avenue. Collins also shared her expectations for the future of the Turkey Trot in the community.

“I would really like to see this grow,” Collins said. “These past couple years, I’ve actually been managing the event from afar since I’ve been in school but this year I’m graduating so next year I’ll be back in Liberal so it’ll be way easier for me to run the event and be way more vocal about advertising and making sure people know about so there’s a bigger turnout.”

Those interested in participating can call Collins at 620-482-0314. Collins said she expects a good turnout for this year’s Turkey Trot.

“Our first year was the best year and we had the best turnout that year,” Collins said. “Since then, there’s been a few less people coming but there’s still been a great turnout each year, we have people who have been part of it each year we’ve had this, which is great.”
