The South Middle School Lady Apache 7th grade girls basketball teams battled hard against Dodge City on Monday afternoon. But in the end, the Lady Cardinals came away with a pair of hard-fought wins over South in conference basketball action at South Middle School.
In the A-team contest, South jumped to a 4-0 lead off baskets by Caro Limon and Rashida Davis, but Dodge held on for a 12-6 win.
Dodge City  tied it at 4 ending the first period, and surged to an 8-4 lead over South at halftime as South turned the ball over three times.
Neither team scored in the third period as both defenses were up to the challenge. South’s Sandra Armendariz got a steal in the waning seconds of the third, but her lay-up rimmed out at the buzzer.
Angelica Alfaro scored for South to make it 8-6 early in the fourth, but that would be South’s last basket of the day as Dodge City pulled away to the 12-6 victory.
Armendariz had two more steals for South in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Apaches were scheduled to play Guymon Central Junior High today at 4:00.

Liberal South 7th B ............................ 17

The first game of the day on Monday was perhaps the most exciting as Dodge City held on to down the South B-team 18-17.
Dodge City led 6-3 after the first and 8-5 at halftime as Kim Navarro and Abril Bueno found the net for South.
Tiara Wiltshire scored to cut Dodge City’s lead to 8-7 early in the fourth, then Navarro gave South a 9-8 lead at 2:06 of the third. Dodge was able to regain the lead 10-9 at the end of the third and increased that advantage to 12-9 early in the fourth.
But South stormed back as Wiltshire cut it to 12-11 and Angelica Rodriguez gave South a 13-12 lead. Dodge inched back ahead at 14-13, but Valeria Ortiz gave South the lead again at 15-14.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Dodge went up 16-15 before Navarro again put South in the lead at 17-16. After Dodge City again inched ahead, South played for the last shot after a steal by Ortiz, but the final shot was just a little short at the buzzer.
