Tristen Bigham made shot after shot, giving the Redskins a chance to get their first Western Athletic Conference win in The Big House friday, but turnovers and a late technical put the game out of reach in the final 17.7 seconds, and the Redskins fell 76-68.

Liberal built a 21-13 lead in the first quarter with two threes from Bigham and another from Cameron Riley.

But Dodge City finished the quarter on an 8-3 run, and the Redskins had a 24-21 lead.

Dodge City connected on a pair of threes in the second quarter while Ryan Petty was battling through foul trouble, substituting Riley in and out on offense and defense, and Dodge City made 10 of 14 free throw attempts while the Redskins only attempted five free throws in the first half and made four of them, but the difference allowed the Red Demons to take a 38-37 halftime lead.

But the Redskins battled back in the third quarter with eight more points from Bigham, and the Redskins took a 52-51 lead into the fourth quarter.

But the Red Demons continued to push the ball to the basket, forcing the Redskins to foul, and Dodge City took a 68-62 lead with three minutes to play.

The red Demons began to melt the clock, pulling the ball out and passing around the perimeter until Bigham intercepted a pass and headed to the basket.

He put the shot up while being grabbed by a Red Demon, and the shot went in while the Red Demon was called for an intentional foul. Bigham made both free throws and cut the lead to 68-66.

The Redskins cut the lead to 68-67 and had two chances to take the lead before Dodge City was able to push the lead to 70-67.

Liberal still had a chance to tie with a three, but a missed shot was rebounded by Dodge City, and Ethan Hatcher was called for a foul and a technical, and Dodge City made all four free throws with 17.7 seconds to play, and another Liberal foul allowed the Red Demons to add two more free throws for the 76-68 final.

Bigham led the Redskins with 27 points, and Syris Dunlap had 12.

“They beat us at the free throw line,” Liberal coach Ryan Petty said. “We got in foul trouble early. It was a tough night. We turned it over 24 times, and you will have a hard time winning when you turn it over that many times.”

The Redskins will travel to Salina Thursday for a weekend tournament.
