The defenses dominated early, but the Liberal Lady Redskins hit their stride after the first quarter and ran away from Dodge City with a 47-27 win.

Whitney Hay knocked down two three pointers in the first quarter to give Liberal an 8-7 lead, and Audrey Gilmore added another three in the second quarter, and the Lady Redskins had a 20-16 lead.

Liberal didn’t allow Dodge City to make a field goal in the third quarter, only giving up three free throws while scoring 14 points to take a 34-19 lead.

Lucero connected on her second three in the fourth quarter, and Liberal coach Carter Kruger was able to get 11 Lady Redskins into the game after building a 20-point lead, and the reserves were able to maintain the advantage in the final three minutes to earn the 47-27 win.

Lucero led the balanced scoring night with 12 points. Hay scored nine points, all threes, and Machia Mullens had eight.

“Dodge City is a quality, well-coached team,” Kruger said. “They shut us down in the first half, but we got clicking after halftime, and I thought our kids really competed and played hard.”

Kruger wanted his team to get started before the final three minutes of the first quarter when the score was still 0-0.

“I’d rather be 10-10,” he said. “It stresses you out as a coach. Our kids handled the pressure, and they responded well to that stretch when we didn’t score.”

The Lady Redskins moved to 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference and will face non-conference opponents with a trip to Oklahoma City Saturday followed by a weekend tournament in Salina.
