TURPIN, Okla. — Early on it looked like Turpin might make a game of it. But big runs set up by pressure defense helped the Beaver Lady Dusters cruise to an easy win over the Turpin Lady Cardinals, 55-21.

In the game’s first few minutes Micaela Young and Saylor Parker each scored five to give Turpin a 10-6 lead and their fans hope. But those hopes were quickly dashed by Beaver’s suffocating full-court pressure that helped the Lady Dusters go on a 21-0 run over the next eight minutes.

“Right now, we’re in a pretty tough stretch of our schedule,” Turpin coach Braydon Robinson said. “At the beginning of the year we played some teams that sagged off and made it easy, but we just don’t have enough good ball-handlers against pressure defense. We’re struggling with that.”

Trailing 31-16 at the half, things went from bad to worse for the Lady Cardinals as they failed to score a single point in the third quarter that was a 17-0 run for the Lady Dusters.

“We game planned to run a diamond and one on (Rylie) Schlessman,” Robinson said. “At the beginning of the game we were taking care of the basketball so we were able to set up our defense. But Micaela (Young) got in foul trouble and we had an eight-minute stretch of just turning the ball over and them shooting layups.”

Beaver’s Rylie Schlessman scored 11 straight points to start the second half, and finished the game with 20 points to lead all scorers. It total, eleven Lady Dusters scored with Zoee Weaver and Sydnee Looper each scoring six off the bench.

Meanwhile, just three players scored for Turpin. Micaela Young finished with 10; Saylor Parker added 8, and Callie McVay 3.

Beaver (9-5) will play Aline-Cleo, Thursday at 11 a.m. in the first round of the Buffalo Tournament.

Turpin (5-10) will take on Texhoma, Thursday at 5:40 p.m. in the first round of the Texhoma Tournament.
