As part of Wildfire Awareness Week, Seward County Fire Rescue is asking all rural residents to take the week of Jan. 22 to prepare their properties for the dangers of wildfires.

“Forecasted conditions are more extreme than seen in 2017, and rural residents need to take steps to prepare,” Fire Chief Andrew Barkley said in a press release.

Barkley recommended the following steps to prepare for such fires:

• Clear all dry grasses 100 feet around homes and barns, and mow an additional 25 feet out.

• Clear fence lines and create fire breaks along those fence lines.

• Make sure access to property is clear to larger fire apparatus and dry grasses are mowed down 25 feet on each side.

• Have an escape plan if the case may arise.
