The South Middle School Apaches wrestling team captured the championship of the South/West invitational tournament on Saturday at Liberal High School, downing Hugoton 57-35 in the championship match.
West finished fourth behind Kenneth Henderson, falling to the Falcons 59-44.
Alex Bermudes, Bryan Miller, Rex Heronemus, Brandon Kisner and Tristian Martinez all had good days for the Apaches.
Heronemus and Sergio Borjas went undefeated for the Apaches.
The Dumas Junior High School team out of the Texas Panhandle pulled out of the tournament. Their wrestling coaches also coach the high school football team.
That gave South an extra match.
“They started wrestling last Wednesday, they just couldn’t come,” said South athletic director Jason Diseker.
“We made it work, we were able to get a lot of JV kids on that open mat, that made a lot of coaches happy, a lot of parents happy.
“A lot of kids saw mat time. That’s the main thing, getting those kids on the mat.”
There were nine officials, five veterans and four new officials, who were able to get some training.
“They did a good job,” Diseker said.
The wrestling teams from both South and West will travel to Dumas, Texas on Friday afternoon.
