What started as a defensive battle ended in a blowout win for the Lady Redskins Friday in a 57-38 win over Great Bend in the Big House.

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the bucket in the first quarter, and a rare slow start for the Lady Redskins left them tied with the Lady Panthers 6-6 at the end of the first quarter.

But Machia Mullens took over in the second quarter, scoring 13 points to lead the Lady Redskins to a 21-point period and a 27-16 halftime lead.

The Lady Redskins have dominated the third quarter all season, and Friday was no exception. Katie Horyna drove to the basket for three lay-ups and a jump shot to score eight points in the period, and freshman Aubrey Warden also stepped up, coring five points to help the Lady Redskins outpace the Lady Panthers 18-6, and the Lady Redskins had a 45-22.

Audrey Gilmore and Ali Lucero drained threes in the fourth quarter, and Liberal coach Carter Kruger cleared his bench after building a 30-point lead, and the Lady Redskins coasted to the 57-38 win.

“We had a really slow start,” Kruger said. “We can’t turn the ball over seven times in the first quarter. It’s hard to play good basketball when your offense isn’t effective. It was good for us to get to play a lot of girls. We will need everyone to play for us down the stretch, it was good for them to get on the court and prove themselves.”

Mullens led the Lady Redskins with 18 points. Horyna had 12, Gilmore scored 11, and Warden had nine.

“Machia dominated inside,” Kruger said. “It was nice to see her on the court and not in fouled trouble. Aubrey Warden had a nice night, too.”

The No. 5 Lady Redskins will host Guymon Tuesday before hosting Hays Friday in a battle for first in the Western Athletic Conference.
