For three quarters, the Lady Redskins couldn’t fins their stride in a battle for first place against the Hays Lady Indians Friday night in The Big House.

But Katie Horyna erupts for 13 points in the fourth quarter, and Liberal moved into a first-place tie with the Lady Indians with a 46-38 win.

Liberal missed its first five shots of the game, but so did Hays, but the Lady Indians were able to knock down three outside shots to build an 11-4 lead before Machia Mullens was able to hit a shot late in the period to cut the lead to 11-6.

Mullens added five more in the second despite picking up two fouls, and Audrey Gilmore knocked down a three and a jump shot that allowed the Lady Redskins to outscore Hays 14-7 in the period and take a 20-18 halftime lead.

But the Lady Redskins struggled in the third quarter and did not make a shot from the field.

The Lady Redskins only managed five free throws in the period while Hays put up 12 points including two three pointers, and the Lady Indians headed to the final period with a 30-25 lead.

But after struggling for three quarters to knock down shots, the Lady Redskin offense sprang to life in the fourth quarter.

Liberal erased the Hays lead, but it took four minutes for the Lady Redskins to take the lead at 34-32.

Thats when Horyna took over, driving to the basket for two lay-ups and making six of seven free throw attempts down the stretch.

The Lady Redskins missed the front end of two one-and-one chances, but their defense made up for it with solid stops and rebounds, and the Lady Redskins outscored Hays 21-8 in the final period to earn the 46-38 win.

“We had good shots in the first quarter, we just couldn’t knock them down,” Liberal coach Carter Kruger said.

But when the Lady Redskins found the bucket, they hammered it in the fourth quarter.

“We found our rhythm with about seven minutes left in the game,” Kruger said. “We were much more aggressive attacking, and that led to fouls and showed some toughness and resolve throughout the game.”

Horyna led all scorers with 19 points, 13 of those in the fourth quarter. Mullens had 12.

“Katie made some plays and free throws,” Kruger said. “ We Got a bock and rebound, and that led to a fast break for Katie, she got an and one and that is what won the game.”

And Kruger expected more tests form Hays.

“Hays is one of the better defensive teams in the state,” Kruger said. “They make it really tough. Hays shot the ball well. They have some good players. It will be a big rivalry for the next few years for sure.”
