Covarrubias battles headwind, still turns in fastest time

• Leader & Times

The 2018 Pancake Day race brought home a victory for Liberal thanks to Gaby Covarrubias and her time of 1:08.8. Covarrubias and her fellow racers pitted themselves against cool temperatures and high winds for this year’s race.

“My first feeling was I was out of breath,” Covarrubias said after completing the race. “My other feeling was I was shaking nervous and that wind definitely made a difference.”

Covarrubias also talked about her mindset after officially starting on the route. Covarrubias’ time beat Olney winner Katie Godof’s time of 1:11.4.

“When the gun went off for the false start, my heart went straight to my feet,” Covarrubias said with a chuckle. “Then when the gun went off, all I could think was ‘We’re going now, there’s no turning back, let’s go.’”

Covarrubias now joins the ranks of storied past Liberal winners including Summer Parsons, Billie Warden and Hannah Belton. So how does she feel about that?

“It’s very special,” Covarrubias said. “This is my hometown, I was born and raised here in Liberal, and I’ll always hold it very close to my heart.”
