L&T staff report

Topeka West started quick in Tuesday’s first round Sub-State game against the Liberal Redskins and never looked back, using a 10-0 start to run away with an 83-58 win, ending Liberal’s season.

The Chargers pressed the Redskins, and it helped build a 38-19 halftime lead.

Liberal struggled to connect on the deep ball, only making one of nine three point attempts in the first half.

But the Redskins started strong in the second half, throwing passes over the top of the press that sparked a 9-2 run.

But Topeka answered with a three, and the Redskins couldn’t dig out of the first-half hole.

Senior Tristen Bigham scored 10 of his game high 18 points in the fourth quarter, and senior Kace Vongsokda joined Bigham in double digits with 11.

Liberal ended the game with five three pointers, but West was able to connect on nine long-range shots and had several dunks off Liberal turnovers.

Cameron Riley ended his high school basketball career with nine points, and Ethan Hatcher played his last game as a Redskin with seven points. Senior Kris Workman scored two.

The loss ended Liberal’s season at 8-13, the first losing season for the Redskins in four years.

After two straight seasons dominated by seniors on the roster, the Redskins will look to rebuild next season with a large incoming junior class, including Lee and Hunter Hatcher, Braxton Hyde, Syris Dunlap and Elijah McCarter.
