A Liberal native has become one of the United States Air Force’s newest Lieutenant Colonels  — Lt. Col. Jonathan “Jonny” L. Mills.

He and his wife, Denise (Depuy) Mills, and their children, Bailey, Laken, Karis and Deacon, were joined by Jonny’s parents, Bill and Deanne Mills; sister, Melissa Emery, and husband, Troy Emery, and children, Preston Grant, Payton and Keely Emery, all of Liberal; Denise’s parents, Ray and Lois Depuy, of Choctaw, Okla.; brother, David Depuy, of Shawnee, Okla.; friends and co-workers to witness his promotion at one of the most prestigious places in Washington D.C., the National Archives Museum.

The Archives is home to the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of the United States of America. After some time in the Rotunda viewing the documents, the ceremony was called to order and opened in prayer.

Colonel Jack Allen, the Presiding Officer, addressed the guests and highlighted why the Air Force saw potential in Major Mills and sought to promote him to Lt Col.  Colonel Allen called for the promotion orders to be published.

Major Mills’ wife and children were called forward to pin on his new rank of Lt Col.  After the pinning on of rank, Lt. Col. Mills took the oath of office in which he swore to support and defend the Constitution which was located just a few feet behind him. Lt. Col. Mills and his family recently moved to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., after serving the last three years in Virginia at the National Reconnaissance Office.
