The Seward County Commission will be looking at the appeal of applications for a master electrical certificate and electrical contractor license at tonight’s regular meeting.
Edwin Lopez recently applied for both the certificate and license, and both applications were denied because minimum requirements had not been met.
“Mr. Lopez does not meet the requirement of having a valid journeyman certificate for a minimum of two years,” said information in the agenda packet for tonight’s meeting. “He appealed the staff decision to deny his applications and was heard by the county commission on Feb. 5, 2018.”
The information added at that time, commissioner C.J. Wettstein requested that Lopez obtain documentation of the additional field experience he has and submit it for review.
“Mr. Lopez has not provided any additional field experience documentation, but has requested to have this matter considered again,” the information said.
Kansas state statute and the Seward County licensing code require applicants for the master electrical certificates of competency to provide proof of having a valid journeyman electrical certificate for a minimum of two years in order to obtain a master certificate.
This is in addition to testing, field experience and other requirements. There is no financial impact to the county, and the item is pending the decision of the commission.
Staff is recommending denial of the application as the applicant does not meet the minimum state or local standards for licensure. Staff likewise recommends that the board uphold the minimum qualification requirements for all contractors as the purpose of these requirements is to protect the health, safety and general welfare of the public.
Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 in the commission chambers in the Seward County Administration Building.
