Liberal swept its second double header to start the 2018 season Thursday with a pair of wins against Ulysses.

Liberals’ pitching dominated while the bats were alive despite the cold and windy conditions.

Liberal took Game 1 in a run-rule shortened no-hit shutout, 15-0.

Braxton Hyde pitched all four innings and didn’t allow a hit while walking four and striking out six.

While Hyde kept the bases clean, the Redskin batters belted out 10 hits and took advantage of eight walks and three Ulysses errors to score 15 runs.

Liberal opened with five runs in the first inning, added another in the second, and then put up five more in the third and four in the fourth to end the game by run rule.

Cesar Burciaga led the Redskins with three RBIs with a three-for-four performance at the plate.

Brody Warren and Ethan Green each had two RBIs. Burciaga and Warren also had doubles in the win, and Elijah McCarter had two stolen bases.

In Game 2, the Redskins continued to collect hits and take advantage of Ulysses miscues in a 16-1 run-rule win.

Liberal again scored five runs in the first inning and two more in the second before Ulysses finally broke through to score a run in the top of the third.

But the Redskins responded with six in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth to enact the run-rule, 16-1.

Warren pitched the first three innings for the Redskins, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Javier Bojorquez pitched the final inning without giving up a run despite allowing two hits while striking out one.

The Redskins also played perfect in the field, not committing any errors while the Tigers struggled, committing 14 errors in the four-inning game.

McCarter, Francisco Terrazas and Bojorquez each had two RBIs in the win while Hyde, Burciaga, Bojorquez, and Green eachs cored three times.

Te win pushed the Redskins to 4-0 on the season and will travel to Great Bend Tuesday to open Western Athletic Conference play.
