• Daily Leader staff report

A Liberal man is dead following a two-vehicle fatality involving a semi and a passenger car Friday afternoon in Seward County.
Around 4:10 p.m., a 1989 Ford was headed westbound on Seward County Road 6, and a 2004 Kenworth was southbound on Road O. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the semi failed to yield to the car at Road O, and the Ford then struck the Kenworth in the drive axles. The Ford then came to rest in the southeast corner ditch of the intersection.
The driver of the Ford, 78-year-old Juan D. Juarez-Valenzuela of Liberal, was taken to Southwest Medical Center in Liberal with injuries, and at 4:45 p.m. Friday, he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the semi, John H. Klassen, 45, of Liberal, and a passenger, Anna Klassen, 48, also of Liberal, were not injured in the collision.
Seat belts were in use in the Kenworth, but were not in use in the Ford, according to the KHP report.
