DODGE CITY — The West Middle School 8th grade basketball teams split their games Monday in the first round of the Arkansas River Middle School tournament. The A-team fell to Dodge City 37-27 and the B-team defeated Garden City Abe Hubert 32-14. West did not take care of golden offensive oppurtinitoes from the free throw strip and fell behind in the first quarter 11-6. Foul trouble and miseed free throws put the warriors down at halftime 22-14. The ladies were 4-for-14 from the free throw line. In the third quarter, West could not cut into the lead as both teams scored 6 points. The Warriors tried to make a run but the charity stripe was not kind to the warriors only making 3-of-13 in the second half. The Warriors will play for third place aganist Abe Hubert today. West was 7-for-26 from the free throw line. Jasmine Hernandez scored 10, Kelly Ramirez 11, Starr Bauer 4, Megan Besecker 2. West kept the pressure on and led at the half 16-3 as the Warrior defense was swarming all over the floor and Abe hubert had a tough time making any baskets. Hanna Roberts exploded for 6 third quarter points and the warriors stretched thier led to 25-9, and won going away 32-14. Coach Adams said the girls were ready to play and went out and put a total team effort together. The warriors will play Garden City Kenneth Henderson in the finals.
