Leader & Times staff report
ULYSSES — Liberal started the new year with a stingy defense, only giving up 28 points to Ulysses in a 46-28 Redskin win.
Jade Cathey led the Redskins with 20 points after scoring only one point in the first half.
Liberal fell behind early in the game but rallied to tie the score 19-19 at half.
And Liberal’s second half defensive effort caged the Tigers. Ulysses only scored nine points in the second half while the Redskins put in 27, and 19 of those came from Cathey.
Ulysses expected to use a perimeter attack against the Redskins, a tactic that had the Tigers out to a 4-1 start to the season. But Ulysses only made one of 17 three-point shots against Liberal.
Along with Cathey’s 20 points was Deaton with eight.
Liberal (4-2) will travel to Hays Friday for the Western Athletic Conference opener.
