TYRONE, Okla. — Most high school basketball coaches would be disappointed in a 29-point loss. But Tyrone girls head coach Tisha Loomis wasn’t, even after her Lady Bobcats lost 60-31 to Balko on Tuesday night.
Balko is, after all, the No. 11-ranked team in the state of Oklahoma.
“I was happy that we hung with them within 20 points there for a long time,” Loomis said. “I felt good that we’re playing them that close.”
Tyrone (4-5) was a little shell-shocked to start the game.
“We were, we got ourselves in a hole,” Loomis said. “But we’re good at battling.”
Balko opened the game with a 25-0 run that lasted the entire first quarter. The key was a little bit of pressure that forced multiple turnovers leading to easy baskets for the Lady Bison.
Jaylee Mays scored 9 first quarter points and Kyla Cowan added a pair of 3-pointers. Mays ended up with 18 for the contest.
Tyrone’s first basket cae courtesy of Breanne DeLeon at the 6:45 mark of the second period. The Lady Bobcats outscored Balko 19-15 in the second period and trailed 40-19 at halftime.
Shayla Cornelson led Tyrone with seven points, Darrian DeLeon added six, Breanne DeLeon five and Alejandra Rubio four for Tyrone. Cassi Courkamp, Tori Dumler, Monica Olivas and Samantha Weissel each added two and Shelby Davis 1.
“I really liked the hustle of Darrian DeLeon,” Loomis said. “This’e been doing a really good job. She’s one of those girls who thinks she’s bigger than she actually is.”
In addition to Mays’ 18, Jordie Jett scored 9, Kelsi Stevens 8, Monica Bennett 7 and Cowan 6.
