Leader & Times staff report
HOOKER, Okla. — The Hooker High School basketball teams split a pair of contests Tuesday at home against Texline, Texas. The Bulldog boys won 76-52 while the girls fell 41-37.
The Hooker boys (6-5) were at full strength for the first time all season as Payson Slater returned to the lineup after breaking his collar bone during football. Joe Bean paced the Dogs with 27 points.
“We had a lot more depth than we’ve had, and we just really pressured them and got out and ran,” head coach Bud Valerius said.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-6) knew going in the Texline had a pair of strong shooters, they just couldn’t contain them.
“They had two girls that did almost all of the scoring,” head coach Ray Kennedy said. “We knew that going in, and we just didn’t get them shut down.”
Shayla Mathis led Hooker with 15, Jayme Walton 9 and Jade Cathcart 6. Mathis added 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Both Hooker teams will be at home again on Tuesday to take on Rolla.
