HOOKER, Okla. — Hooker High School girls basketball coach Ray Kennedy’s game plan every night is to make sure Shayla Mathis gets the ball. If that doesn’t work, kick the ball outside so the likes of Jayme Walton can get a good look from downtown.
Tuesday night against Rolla, part one of the game plan worked to perfection. Mathis drained 33 points and the Lady Bulldogs dominated the Lady Pirates, 71-50.
“We want to try to get the ball inside as much as we can,” Kennedy said. “We want to look to go inside-out.”
Hooker (6-6) used its pressure defense to create turnovers, including four in the first few minutes. Shots by Mathis, Jade Cathcart, Crystal Ferguson and Walton gave Hooker a 10-5 lead early that the Lady Dogs pushed to a 14-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Rolla turned the ball over to start the second, and Ferguson, Walton and Mathis made the Lady Pirates pay with three straight baskets for a 21-9 lead.
Then the defense really tightened up as Mathis, Morgan Daves Walton and Shania Miller each had steals in a run that gave the Lady Dogs a 34-12 advantage that they built to 40-16 at halftime.
Kennedy was happy with his team’s overall play, but there were some period when the ladies relaxed a little.
“We played in spurts,” Kennedy said. “We’re not playing as consistent as we need to, especially on the defensive end. I really can’t blame it on youth anymore. The freshman girls that are playing have been playing half the season now.”
Hooker led 54-34 at the end of the third as Kennedy emptied his bench.
“We just need to be more consistent, and I felt like we were doing that right before Christmas break, and we just haven’t gotten back into it yet,” Kennedy said.
Mathis led Hooker with 33 points, Walton added 11, Cathcart 10Ferguson and Brittney Bergner six each and Miller three.
The Lady Bulldogs will next travel to Laverne and Texhoma before participating in the Texhoma Tournament.
