For most high school basketball players, scoring more than 20 points in a game is a special night.
For Justice Norah, it’s just another average game.
Norah scored 27 points Monday in a 47-35 win over Garden City. Norah also hit three three-pointers in the game including two in the first quarter.
Six other Lady Redskins also combined to score the other 20 points, but it was the defense that most impressed Liberal coach Shane Stout.
Garden City’s big post, Johna McClelland had been averaging double digits, but the Lady Redskin defense held her to just six points on the night.
“Emily really keyed the defense against her,” Stout said. “She battles every game.”
Liberal jumped out to an early 12-6 lead and was ahead 27-17 at half.
It was the same advantage Liberal had last week against Hays, a game that slipped away from the Lady Redskins in the second half.
“This was exactly like the Hays game at half,” Stout said. “The only difference was we played a second half tonight.”
Liberal continued to provide defensive pressure, and unlike the breakdown in Hays where Liberal was outscored by 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Lady Redskins added to their lead against Garden City.
Jai Chapman hit a buzzer beater to end the first half, and the Lady Redskins hit 11 of 17 free throw attempts in the second half to protect the lead.
The win pulled the Lady Redskins even in the Western Athletic Conference race at 1-1 while Garden City dropped to 0-3.
“If you fall to 0-2, you’re in trouble,” Stout said.
Liberal will not play another WAC game until February. The Lady Redskins will travel to Scott City Friday and will participate in the Colby Orange and Black Classic next week. Liberal (4-4, 1-1) will not return to the Big House until Jan. 28.
