L&T staff report
GARDEN CITY — Five straight turnovers in the fourth quarter hurt the Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs Thursday afternoon in a 52-50 loss to Elkhart in the semifinals of the Hi Plains League tournament at Garden City Community College.
Heights (7-2) will take on Leoti for third place today at 3:30 p.m.
The Lady Mustangs got down early and seemed to panic, according to head coach Barry Mellen.
“They (Elkhart) did the things they needed to do,” Mellen said. “They out-rebounded us, they made their free throws. They had one girl score 29 points on us.
“We got a little bit behind early and we started forcing things and just kind of panicked. We’ve got to learn to play our game and get back into it.”
SWH surged back ahead by six in the fourth quarter before the late turnovers allowed Elkhart to grab the win.
“If we’re going to get beat, we’re going to get beat playing our best game,” Mellen said. “We just didn’t play our best game.”
Sheree Ryan led SWH with 13, Heidi Brown and Marissa Angell 11 each, Rebi Jacobs 9 and Tatianna Chandler 4.
