FORGAN, Okla. - On a night when the outside shots were not falling, the No.1 Forgan Bulldogs gutted out an impressive win over the 17th ranked Arnett Wildcats, 58-39. Arnett was looking for their second straight upset of a top ten team after defeating No.9 Hammon by 27, Monday in a neutral site matchup.
“Good game for us - physical, good team,” said Bulldogs coach Todd Kerr. “(They) tried to make the game choppy. There wasn’t a flow, and the way it was called there wasn’t going to be a good flow to it.”
Much like the girls game before it, this game was filled with the sound of whistles with 41 fouls called.
A 10-4 Forgan run in the third best epitomized the game, and ultimately decided it as well.
After starting the half by giving up two steals to Arnett’s Josh Kibbe, and seeing the Wildcats score six quick fast break points to cut the Bulldog lead from 18 to 14, Forgan held Arnett without a field goal for 7:23. The run put Forgan back on top by 20 points with 6:37 left in the game, and Arnett never recovered.
“They did what they needed to do to try and stay in it,” said Kerr. “We’re not shooting the ball very well, but I still think we did a good job, and we are going to continue to get better.”
Kerr also described what he liked about his team the most tonight with one word, “toughness”.
Early in the contest, Arnett took a 6-5 lead. But the Bulldogs responded, and ended the first quarter with a 9-0 run to lead, 14-6. A 14-2 run over the final five minutes of the half, fueled by Ryan Radcliff’s 14 second-quarter points, put the Bulldogs up 31-13 at the break.
Ryan Radcliff was the game’s top scorer with 23 points, all scored in the second and fourth quarters - including 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Matt Morris came off the bench to add 9, while Tanner Jones and Tyler McReynolds each scored 8.
Forgan is now 19-2, and will host Southwestern Heights Tuesday.
