GARDEN CITY — Liberal High School junior Justin McPhail continued to domiante the 215-pound weight class, rolling to the championship of the Rocky Welton Invitational Saturday at Garden City High School.
McPhail defeated the 2-time defending state champion from Rio Rancho, N.M. in a 5-3 decision. The junior had two takedowns and an escape, according to head coach Michael Pewthers.
Liberal was 21st in the final team standings out of 28 teams.
“I was proud of the guys in a very tough tournament,” Pewthers said.
Adebayo Briamah went 3-2,  Ayodale Braimah went 1-2,  Cody Smith went 2-2,  Dalton Moody went 1-2,  and Jorge Nuñez went 0-2.
Liberal is scheduled to take on Lamar, Colo. in a dual on Tuesday evening in The Big House before traveling to Great Bend on Thursday.
