Seward County defended their home court and their position in first place of the Jayhawk West Saturday with a dominating 86-65 win over Butler.
Te highlight play of the night came with 8:56 to play when Phil Hawkins dished an alley oop pass to Daveon Boardingham who jammed the ball and was fouled for a three-point play and a 77-50 lead.
Marquez Patterson had five steals and converted them into points by using his teammates on fast breaks. Patterson dished the ball off after pulling defenders, and the unselfish play allowed Seward to build their lead to as many as 29 points in the second half.
Rafriel Guthrie hit a three-pointer to start the game, and Phil Hawkins followed with another three to give Seward a 6-2 lead. Baskets by Jeremy Jones, Irvin Hollinger and another by Hawkins put Seward ahead 12-2 in the first three minutes of the game.
Butler responded with some long balls of their own. The Grizzlies hit four three pointers in the next five minutes to cut Seward’s lead to 17-15.
With 10 minutes to play, Butler was still within two, 20-18.
That’s when Seward took over.
The Saints forced Butler into turnovers and dominated the boards in the next 10 minutes and ran over the Grizzlies with a 29-10 run to take a 49-28 lead at half.
Butler continued to try to keep the game close with the long ball, but even with nine three-pointers in the game, Butler still could not keep pace with the Saints.
The Saints put on an offensive show in the second half, and Butler could not get closer than 14 points.
With the balanced onslaught, Butler didn’t know who to try and stop when six Saints ended the game in double digits.
Marky Nolen paced Seward with a double-double, scoring 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Boardingham led all scorers with 18 points and also had three blocks. Jones had 14 and Hawkins had 12. Guthrie scored 11 and Hollinger had 10.
Seward forced Butler into 32 turnovers including 20 steals.
Seward (19-3, 7-1) will have a chance to extend their lead in the Jayhawk West Wednesday with a key match-up against Hutchinson (20-2, 6-2). The game begins at 8 p.m.
