HOOKER, Okla. — If ever there was a game that could be called ugly, it was Monday’s 42-24 Hooker win over Elkhart. Neither team had a particularly stellar shooting night, but Elkhart’s was worse. The Wildcats laid a goose egg in the third quarter, which allowed Hooker (15-6) to pull away for the win.
Hooker led by a field goal, 17-14 at halftime, but pulled out to a two-touchdown lead by the end of the third thanks to an 11-0 run.
Hooker’s defense saved the day.
“We did a good job defending them,” Hooker head coach Bud Valerius said. “We talked about defense and rebounding, and we held them scoreless in the third. That’s the first time we’ve done that this year.”
Hooker inched to a 9-5 lead in the first period, led by Joe Bean, Taylor McBee and Gabe Morales.
McBee and Payson Slater kept Hooker just out of reach of the Wildcats in the second.
Then came the third,, as Slater and McBee again led the charge in scoring, while the defense held Elkhart scoreless from the 0:36 mark of the second quarter to the 7:01 mark of the fourth — a 9:35 span.
“This team is really starting to hang their hat on defending,” Valerius said. “They’re starting to see the difference of what defending means and how they can have an ugly game shooting the ball and still win ballgames.”
Bean led Hooker with 10 points — on just one field goal, while McBee added nine and J.D. Ingland 5. Slater added 4.
Hooker awaits the winner of the Beaver-Laverne matchup on Saturday in Beaver for the district championship.
