L&T staff report
Five Liberal High School wrestlers made their way to Harman Arena Thursday for the 2011 Cass 5A state wrestling tournament. The tournament begins today with the championships scheduled for Saturday.
Cody Smith, Adebayo Braimah, Ayodale Braimah, Trenton Wilson and Justin Mchail will wear the Redskin singlets.
One of the favorites in Class 5A is junior Justin McPhail at 215 pounds. McPhail enters the state tournament with just one loss at 31-1 overall. McPhail squares off against Mike Arreola of Emporia in today’s first round.
Arreola sports a 3-6 overall record.
At 130 pounds, Liberal’s Cody Smith will open the tournament against Bret Simmons of Topeka Seaman. Smith foes into the state tournament with a 16-13 record while Simmons is 21-11.
Adebayo Braimah takes his 29-10 record to the 140-pound weight class against Justin Dyer (9-6) of Tecumseh Shawnee Heights.
One of the two unbeaten wrestlers in Kansas comes at 145 pounds in 36-0 Alex Bontz of Andover Central. That’s also where Liberal’s Ayodale Braimah competes, but Braimah won’t have to face Bontz in the first round.
Braimah (19-17) takes on Lansing’s Spencer Blew (31-6) in Friday’s opening round.
Rounding out Liberal’s contingent in Wichita is Trenton Wilson at 152 pounds. Wilson (14-12) has a tough match right off the bat as he takes on Lansing’s Dillon Scanlon (35-3).
Some of the other top wrestlers in Class 5A include Shawnee Heights’ Donnie Lockhart (34-0) at 189 pounds.
At 119 pounds, Kapaun’s Tyler Dryden and McPherson’s Tim Prescott are a combined 57-2 on the season with each having one loss.
Both are on the same side of the bracket. The winner of their likely semifinal match will most likely have to wrestle defending champion Bo Pursel of Lansing. Pursel sits at 32-1 on the season.
