Cimarron hands Lady Mustangs third loss

CIMARRON — Deni Jacobs returned to the Southwestern Heights lineup on Thursday night, but her return was overshadowed by Cimarron’s performance on the court. The No. 2 (2A) Bluejays used a strong second half surge to down the Lady Mustangs 59-48 in the regular season finale.
Southwestern Heights (15-3) jumped to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter behind Heidi Brown, who ended up with a game-high 24 points.
Cimarron (17-3) chipped into that lead in the second and was behind to the Lady Mustangs 24-19 at the half.
Then the bottom fell out for Heights as the Lady Bluejays went on a 20-10 run in the third to pull ahead, and came back with another 20-point effort in the final frame to win going away.
Whitney Garinger scored eight, Sheree Ryan six, Deni Jacobs five and Rachel Stout two.
The Lady Mustangs play host to Lakin on Monday night in the first round of the Sub-State playoffs. Game time is 7 p.m. Cimarron plays host to Syracuse (2-16) on Tuesday in their 2A sub-state game.
• The Mustangs boys team picked up a win in their final regular season game, downing the host Bluejays 44-35 on Thursday night.
Cimarron (4-17) jumped out early, leading 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the Mustangs defense tightened it up a notch, shutting Cimarron out in the second to take a 19-12 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs (5-14) continued their domination in the third quarter before Cimarron got back in gear in the fourth. But by then, Heights was too far ahead.
Jr. Herrera led Heights with 22 points, Ben Johnsrud aded eight, Clayton Chase seven.
Heights will travel to Hoisington on March 4 for the first round of the Sub-State playoffs.
