A new partnership between the Kansas National Guard and the local mixed martial artists will take to the cage Saturday with Throwdown Showdown 9.
“A lot of people believe the Armory is closed,” event promoter Dave Rine said. “It’s not. It is open. These guys are being shipped all over the world, and we want to support them.”
A portion of the proceeds from Saturday’s event will benefit the local Armory and the soldiers that are stationed here.
“We are able to do what we do because of what they are doing,” Rine said.
Throwdown Showdown 9 will feature local pro fighter Jesus Adame (3-1) against Oklahoma City’s Michael Casteel.
While Rine did not reveal specific details about Adame’s competitor, he did have one check marked on the scouting report.
“He’s tough,” Rine said. “That’s what we know.”
The card has a total of 20 bouts, 10 adult fights and 10 youth fights.
As always, the fights will be held under strict rules that do not allow the younger fighters to have head strikes, but with the Pankration qualifying tournament coming up, submissions are allowed.
“The kids are really entertaining,” Rine said. “They are preparing for the Pankration tournament May 7.”
The Armory, which is just west of the City of Liberal softball complex on Seventh Street, has been modified with more lighting for the cage.
“We have lights that will move to the music for the fighters,” Rine said. “They will have their own light show. We will have the cage nice and bright.”
The event is sanctioned by the State of Kansas, and tickets are available at Rine’s American Freestyle Karate. Tickets will be available at the door for $40 cageside or $20 general admission. Doors open at 6 p.m. with fight to begin at 7 p.m.
