If there was one play that epitomized this game, it was this one. With Beaver leading 39-36 with just over two minutes left, Copan trapped Lady Duster Jordan Jesko in the frontcourt. But Jesko found a cutting Jacinda Balderrama for a layup that put Beaver up by 5 on their way to an Area championship win, 45-39.
That was the story of the game. Copan wanted to trap Beaver in the half-court game, but was unable to on a consistent basis. Beaver wanted to trap Copan with their full-court press, and they did with great success. Only a rough night shooting kept it close.
The Lady Dusters jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but the Lady Hornets answered with a 10-1 run to end the first quarter thanks in part to Beaver’s poor free throw shooting. Copan’s comeback also came with a price. The Lady Hornets ended the first quarter with eight team fouls, bad news for a team with only seven healthy players.
Beaver started the second quarter with a 9-0 run to regain the lead, and led 23-18 at the break. Beaver had also forced two Copan starters to the bench with three fouls.
Copan came out of the locker room fired up, and with a 13-6 run to start the second half, regained the lead at 31-29 with 2:30 left in the third. But Beaver’s Balderrama quickly answered with a three to give the Lady Dusters back the lead. It was the seventh, and final, lead change of the game.
Beaver led heading into the fourth stanza by only one, 35-34.
Once again the Lady Dusters turned up the defense holding Copan to only five point just like the second quarter. Copan scored its only field goal of the fourth quarter on a put-back after a missed free throw, but only after going the first six minutes of the fourth without one.
The Lady Dusters made enough free throws down the stretch, and kept the Lady Hornets from getting any good looks at the basket to pull off the win.
Beaver is now 24-2, and is headed for the state tournament for the second time in three years.
