One of Liberal High School’s strong points all season was its defense. But on Thursday night in The Big House, it was the defense that couldn’t get it together.
The result was a 63-41 loss to Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the Class 5A sub-state playoffs. The loss ends Liberal’s season at 9-12, while Kapaun improves to 10-11 and advances in the playoffs.
“We tried some zone,. we tried some different things,” Liberal head coach Drew Gruver told KSCB radio. “I don’t know, maybe it’s just Kapaun. They’re obviously a solid team. They did a nice job running their offense.”
Kapaun got off to a fast start and never looked back.
After Jade Cathey made the score 3-2 with 6:22 left in the first quarter, the Crusaders went on an 8-2 run and led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Liberal hung around with the Crusaders in the second, cutting it to just six points late in the quarter before Kapaun pulled out to a 9-point advantage. Cathey put one in to make it 23-16 Crusaders at the half.
Liberal just couldn’t get the shots to fall most of the game.
“They didn’t shoot it very well in the first half,” Gruver said. “We didn’t play a lick of defense the whole night, that’s the bottom line.”
Kapaun pulled out to a 15-point advantage at the end of the third quarter before winning it by 22.
Cathey led Liberal with 18 points, Slader McVey added 10, DeVondre Livingston had six and Kenlee West five.
Liberal loses four seniors, and will return two players with varsity experience next season.
