STINNETT, Texas — The Turpin Cardinals opened the 2011 baseball season Thursday with a split in the annual West Texas Tournament at Stinnett. Turpin fell 15-3 to the host Comanches in the opener and nipped Amarillo Arbor Academy 15-14 in the second game.
Andrew Bowers took the loss in game one and Clinton Toney got the win in game two for Turpin.
Chance Dye was 2-for-2 and Jake Zielke 1-for-2 with a 2-run homerun as Turpin scattered six hits in the game one loss.
In game two, Toney went 2-for-2 with a homerun, two runs batted in and scored four runs, Dye 3-for-3 with a homer and six RBIs and Zielke was 2-for-2.
The Cardinals (1-1) will head back to Stinnett on Saturday to continue the tournament, taking on Class 3A Dalhart, Texas at 11:30 a.m.
