WILDFIRE: Scourge of the Prairie PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 March 2011 11:12

ABOVE: A grass fire raged across the south side of East U.S. Highway 54 Thursday afternoon. The fire caused the highway to be closed down, in the vicinity of Road 13, for about two hours, Seward County Firefighter Justin Wallace said. The Kansas Highway Patrol, Seward County Sheriff’s Department, Seward County Fire Department and Plains Fire Department all responded to the fire, which was ultimately caused by a FedEx truck losing its drive shaft at approximately 1:30. “What caused it was an auto accident – a property damage accident – that happened on 54,” Wallace said. “A FedEx truck dropped its drive shaft causing it to spark along the highway throwing hot parts into the ditch. It caused the ditch to catch fire, which then resulted in the field catching fire.” Wallace said the fire was finally under control between 5 and 5:30 Thursday evening. Although the fire did not jump Highway 54, it did cross Road 13. No homes were damaged as a result of the fire, however, the Seward County Fire Department estimated approximately 200 acres burned.
