While many of Oklahoma’s baseball and track teams already have several games and meets under their belts, Kansas has taken a breather after a long winter season. But that all changes Tuesday as Liberal’s baseball and girls soccer teams hit the field for real after several weeks of practice.
Luis Aguilar’s Lady Redskins soccer team opens the 2011 campaign Tuesday at 4 p.m. when the Guymon Lady Tigers visit Redskin Field for varsity and junior varsity matchups. Guymon is 0-0-1 after opening with a 0-0 tie against Pampa, Texas a week ago.
After Tuesday’s home game against Guymon, the Lady Redskins hit the road beginning next Monday to play in the Titan Classic in Wichita. Liberal opens the tournament next Monday at 4 p.m. against Wichita South. The Lady Red will advance to play either Haysville Campus or Great Bend on March 30.
Liberal won’t play at home again until April 14 against Great Bend.
• The LHS baseball team of Eric Olmstead also kicks off its season Tuesday with a home battle against Hugoton at 4 p.m. The Redskins will then take a week off before hitting the road to Ulysses on March 29.
After that, Liberal’s freshmen will play host to Garden City on March 31 before the varsity and JV hit the home field again on April 2 against Guymon, and April 5 against Great Bend. The JV will host the Turpin varsity April 7 before the varsity is back in action April 8 against Larned for a varsity-only matchup.
• The Liberal softball team held an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday in preparation for the regular season opener March 29 at Ulysses. The Lady Redskins of head coach Patt Knott will play their first home game on March 31 against Hugoton.
• The Lady Redskin swimmers of coach Shelley Tiedeman open their season March 31 at Garden City. The ladies have no home meets, and the schedule includes trips to Garden City, Great Bend, Wichita Northwest, Maize and Hays.
• The LHS track season begins April 1 with the Ulysses meet, and Liberal’s 5-state Relays takes place a week later at Redskin Field. The schedule also includes travel to meets in Goddard, Great Bend, Holcomb, Hutchinson and Garden City, with the WAC meet in Dodge City this year.
• The LHS boys tennis team begins its season April 2 at Great Bend. LHS will host a JV tournament April 12.
• The Liberal boys golfers open April 7 with its home tournament.
