Liberal swimmers take on Dodge City, Garden City PDF Print E-mail

GARDEN CITY — For a bunch of beginners, the Liberal High School girls swim team didn’t do too shabby in their opening meet of the season Thursday.
“I was very proud of the girls with it being the first swim meet for most of them, we have a lot of beginners,” Liberal swim coach Shelley Tiedeman said. “They were competitive with the other teams.
It was the first meet, so there’s still room for the girls to improve.
“The girls still need to work on their endurance,” Tiedemann said.
Dodge City and Garden City also competed in the meet.
Several swimmers hit personal best times, including Elizabeth Vasquez in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, Yolanda Garcia in the 50 free, Selene Perez in the 50 free, Bella Martinez in the 100-meter freestyle and Paige Ermann in the 100-meter freestyle.
Ashlynn Westerman placed second in the 50-meter freestyle in 29.18 seconds and third in the 100 free in 1:06.35. Alexandra Palma took third place in the 500 Free with a time of 7:53.12 (it was her first time swimming that event) and third place in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:32.56.
Morgan Wills was fifth in the 100 free in 1:11.84 and fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 30.06. Maria Pohorecki took third place in the 100 Breaststroke with a time  of 1:29.32 and fourth place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 3:13.17.
Alley Bowen took fourth in the 100 Backstroke with a time of  1:21.84 and second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:54.31. Taylor Apsley took second in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:29.65  and third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:59.17.
The 200-meter freestyle relay team of Taylor Apsley, Morgan Wills, Alley Bowen and Ashlyn Westerman was third in 2:03.43.
“I was very proud of these girls, last year the fastest time we received was 2:20.25,” Tiedeman said.
The girls travel to Great Bend on Monday.
