ULYSSES — The Liberal Lady Redskins picked the perfect day to break out the bats. Using strong pitching performances from Ramey Petty and Jaycee Darroch, the Lady Redskin softball squad swept the Ulysses Tigers 18-5 and 12-2 in a make-up of the season-opener that was rained out last week.
Petty got the win in the first game, going all five innings. giving up five hits and striking out one.
Jai Chapman went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and Caity Hinnergardt was 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Redskins (3-3).
Darroch got the 5-inning win in the second game, giving up two hits and striking out two.
Kaitlyn Ralston went 2-for-3, Darroch 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Emily Bayouth was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
“We needed the wins for the confidence,” head coach Pat Knott said. “As far as the way we went and played and got through it probably could have been a lot better.
“These two wins were a confidence-builder leading into the WAC and now we’ve got to belt it down and get after it.”
Liberal travels to Great Bend April 12 and hosts Garden City on April 19.
• The junior varsity Lady Redskins are 2-2 after sweeping Ulysses 23-9 and 19-0.
Lynka Phan, Amanda Love and Ashten Cummins each went 4-for-5. Stephanie Sanchez struck out five.
Kambrie Long struck out seven in the second game for Liberal and hit two inside-the-park homeruns.
Love, Katie Jennings and Long all went 3-for-3.
